Frequently Asked Questions

For Filmmakers

Question: My film has was broadcast on a community access station. Is it still eligible for entry?

Answer: Yes. Any non-fiction film or video that has not been screened before at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is eligible for entry. We love premiers, but films and videos that have been screened on television previously are eligible for entry. The only ineligible films are those that have already been screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.

Question: I entered my film last year, but it wasn't selected for screening. I've done a little re-editing. Can I re-enter?

Answer: Yes, we will happily re-consider films that were previously not selected for screening, provided they have seen some degree of re-working.

Question: What formats can you use for projection if my film is selected?

Answer: We screen exclusively from 35mm film prints, DVCAM (NTSC) video and miniDV (NTSC) video. For video, we screen either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios, or 4:3 letterbox. These formats are subject to change, however. If you do not have one of these formats, please let us know what you do have. If we like a film, we will make an effort to get a transfer for you.

Question: My film was released five years ago. Is it eligible for entry?

Answer: Yes, we screen many films and videos from earlier years as part of our "Out of Competition" category. However, only those films that were first screened or broadcast AFTER September 1 of the previous year (ie - 2004 for the 2006 festival) are eligible to screen "in competition" for one of the three awards and possible special jury recognition.

Question: If I send a self-addressed stamped envelope, will Big Sky return my preview tape/DVD?

Answer: No. Without exception, we do not return preview tapes or DVDs.

Question: My film was accepted for screening at the next Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Will the festival cover my airfare or gas money to Missoula?

Answer: No. The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival does provide lodging, festival passes and many vouchers for complimentary food, drink, etc. during the week of the festival, but we DO NOT PROVIDE TRAVEL EXPENSES at this point.

Question: My film is accepted for the next Big Sky film festival. When will it be screened and how many times?

Answer: It will be screened sometime during the week of the festival in February, ONE SCREENING ONLY, unless it wins one of the three competitive categories, in which case it will screen again the final night of the festival. The full schedule of screenings will be released in December.

Question: I shot my 2 minute experimental doc on a mix of VHS and my cell phone's camera mode. Is it eligible for entry?

Answer: YES! We are not at all concerned about production format and we are very open to "experimental" non-fiction works of all types. Since 2004, we have screened one documentary shot on a digital still camera in movie mode and a number of videos shot on Hi8.

Question: We only have a 35mm print of our film. Do you screen from prints or just from video tape?

Answer: We screen lots of video tape, but we love 35mm prints. No problem!

Question: Are student projects eligible for entry? Do you have lower fees for student projects?

Answer: Yes, we love student films and have screened many of them. A student film won the Big Sky Award in 2004 even. We do not have a reduced rate for entry, however. Student films compete just fine with professional entries.
